AE6 Overview Part 4: Multipoint Tracking

Step 10: Click on the Edit Target button in the Tracker Control Palette and make sure Apply Motion To Layer is set to the Mindsprung layer and then click OK.

[an error occurred while processing this directive]Step 11: When you are ready click on the Analyze Forward Button in the Tracker Controls Palette and let AE6 do it’s magic.

If the Tracking gods have smiled down upon you, and your tracking has gone perfectly, you can click the Apply button. If they believe you need to be punished or learn some valuable life lesson, you will need to start and stop the analysis several times before you are complete (Hint: I covered how to do this in a previous installment).

When you click the Apply button, After Effects automatically applies the Corner Pin effect to the Mindsprung layer and then takes the data from the four Track Points and applies them to the Corner Pin corner points.

Don’t forget to turn back on visibility for the layer!

Step 12: For a final tweak, apply the Drop Shadow effect to the Mindsprung layer. You will need to animate the Distance Parameter during the zoom to make the effect believable.

Make a RAM Preview and view the results.

Our Final product..

In the last four installments, we have taken a rather extensive look at the new Track and Stabilize Motion feature in After Effects 6.0. By now you should be very familiar with the interface and the various ways to track data.

Where do you go from here? Luckily we didn’t have to use too many of the Options contained in the Tracker and Stabilize Motion feature. What you need to do now is experiment on your own. When you have free time, practice with some of the footage you have lying around. Practice tracking a clown nose to the talent of your next talking head video, corner pin a word or slogan onto a clapboard from the raw footage you received from the field, or maybe even create your own advertising billboards and place them throughout your next city shot.
