Compression for Mac users again
While you might think that there isn't a whole lot that you can say about compressing your files, there are a bunch of us old macheads that remember our first, Stuffit. Smith Micro recently brought out StuffIt Deluxe 16, which is long overdue, but still a welcome addition to your Mac toolkit, and yes, it does '.zip' formats as well.
Its hard to make improvements on a tool that was simple and good in its first iteration. The problem with adding components, is that the application becomes wrought with features that aren't really useful. Although it's packed with utilities (and a little heavy for the casual compressor), the tools that it carries are really good for someone who needs to compress and deliver regularly.
I've listed some simple Pros and Cons below. Whatever you choose to do with this information (buy / upgrade / skip), make sure that you go up to Smith Micro and download StuffIt Expander, a really clean way to open delivered compressed files from anyone.
With all of the new formats that are available to so many different people that you work with, its likely that you get some compressed files that arent just self-extracting. Stuffit also comes with Stuffit Expander, which has you covered on some of the obscure file formats.
Some of the features in StuffIt Deluxe are
Stuffit Destinations: Drop & Send (great for repetitive sending)
Archive Manager: Advanced compression options
Magic Menu: Get features without launching the whole app (I cant stand magic whatever, usually it means automatically limited, but this is a shortcut)
Expander: Same good old extraction with new definitions
Integration: Destinations can be used with Dropbox, Drive, OneDrive
Mac OS: 64-bit application now (its been 4 years since the last version)
Search: You can search inside the contents of compressed files (yeah yeah PC people)
Scheduler: Backup what youve changed
Get a 6-month subscription to SendStuffNow, a secure online file delivery and storage FREE with StuffIt Deluxe 16. A $60 Value For FREE. Now you can send large files without the hassle of email attachment limits or FTP complexity. Access your sent archives from anywhere, at any time even from your iPhone«, Android« or Smartphone.
I'm usually not a fan of "MAGIC" anything, but it's useful to have on the compression workstation
This is a long overdue reboot of the standard of Mac compression software
Many different features that will help you get daily compression done quickly/easily
Whatever you choose (upgrade / new / skip), get expander right now.
If you are upgrading, this is a no-brainer, supercharge your existing compression workflow.
Simple Mac OS compression for basic file maintenance has many trained for low performance
There are many different tools in the Deluxe package. Its going to take up more than 3x space that the previous version did (150MB now)
